The problem

Most plant food isn't really food. It's salt.

of mass-market fertilizer is synthetic urea and NPK salts: a quick green-up that burns roots, builds up in the soil, and leaves your plant hooked instead of healthy.

A plant fed on salt looks great for two weeks and struggles for the rest of the year. We'd rather feed the soil slowly, the way a field is fed, so the plant can look after itself.
